If you dream it, and have very good programmers, you can create it and make it so.
But you need programmers and seemingly every time something new is installed it requires customization. This causes conflicts and more development work. You definitely need a strong testing platform and you will have some down time on your live platform.
Magneto community edition is the best platform for small and mid sized segments, it has everything you need. It's a great platform which contain everything Customer management, customizable products, downloadable products, multi lang. support, multi store support, coupons, customizable checkout options etc.

I love how in depth this program is and how it seems like they thought of almost everything that you would need to use for an e-commerce business. The product structure is straight forward. Also helpful that I used this at more than one company and my experience with it helps when applying for jobs.
The import/export feature is horrible and not helpful. Unless you are versed in magento and have prior knowledge it is really hard to teach someone else how to use these features.
Excellent platform for creating e-commerce sites for clients. The software is highly extensible if you are qualified. It's very powerful and flexible. With the right hosting in place it can also be very fast. The admin is easily customizable without recreating the user experience for each new page. The filtering on admin grids is excellent. The only drawback is that it is still very buggy.
